The idea of March of the Gods: Botswana Metalheads was conceived by Raffaele, the director of the project when he came across photographs from Frank Marshall’s project Renegades on Vice Magazine. It presented a vision of Botswana’s heavy metal subculture and portrays the unique local metalhead aesthetic which combines elements of British heavy metal of the eighties, cowboy fashion and biker elements creating an interesting anthropological study of a subculture like no other. Raffaele’s curiosity about the metal scene in Botswana led to an intensive research and a series of attempts to contact various local bands. Two years later, in April 2013, a team of three filmmakers landed in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana to shoot a documentary on one of the most predominant local bands, Wrust. In the following weeks they were immersed into the local metal brotherhood—interviewing several local bands, fans, musicians and people who offered anthropological insights into the subculture and its history. The crew also filmed and experienced the madness of the local metal gigs and spent enough time with the local people to understand the country’s uniqueness through its contemporary culture but also its problems and contradictions.

Coming soon on Adult Swim from Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder: BLACK JESUS. FROM AARON MCGRUDER:

As the world now knows, The Boondocks will be returning for a fourth season, but I will not be returning with it. I’d like to extend my gratitude to Sony and Adult Swim for three great seasons.

I created The Boondocks two decades ago in college, did the daily comic for six years, and was showrunner on the animated series for the first three seasons. The Boondocks pretty much represents my life’s work to this point. Huey, Riley, and Granddad are not just property to me. They are my fictional blood relatives. Nothing is more painful than to leave them behind.

To quote a great white man, “Hollywood is a business”. And to quote another great white man, “Don’t hold grudges”.

What has never been lost on me is the enormous responsibility that came with The Boondocks - particularly the television show and it’s relatively young audience. It was important to offend, but equally important to offend for the right reasons. For three seasons I personally navigated this show through the minefields of controversy. It was not perfect. And it definitely was not quick. But it was always done with a keen sense of duty, history, culture, and love. Anything less would have been simply unacceptable.

As for me, I’m finally putting a life of controversy and troublemaking behind me with my upcoming Adult Swim show, BLACK JESUS.

RIP to 2014 Wrestling Hall of Famer The Ultimate Warrior/James Hellwig. You can say he was an actor because of the character he created and portrayed. Check out his incredible induction speech and RAW speech just a few days ago on YouTube.

Old Harlem Archives: Back in the day in Harlem when you were short on the rent you threw rent parties and gave these cards out. They usually had rhymes from popular songs of the day. Poet Langston Hughes amassed a large collection of these cards because he was ” intrigued by the little rhymes at the top of the little cards..”These are a few from Yale Univeristy’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript library where his works are housed. But when you come to The People’s Film Festival May 29-June 1st you can walk by his brownstone at 20 east 127th street and create your own walking tour of the addresses on these cards.
